It is well recognised that exploring difficulties conceiving and undergoing fertility treatment can be an extremely emotional experience for an individual or a couple. At Aberdeen Fertility Centre we aim to support patients through this time and we have a counsellor who is available to all those undergoing investigations as well as treatment (before, during and after).
There are different types of counselling depending on your individual needs.
Therapeutic counselling is designed to offer support to individuals and couples at any point in their treatment in a confidential setting. It is an opportunity to talk about how you are feeling, to explore the emotional and psychological impact of infertility/fertility treatment and to look at coping strategies that may help during what can be an extremely stressful time.
All egg, embryo and sperm donors , all recipients of gametes and surrogates are asked to attend an implications counselling session prior to treatment> The aim of this is to help you to make an informed decision about your forthcoming treatment and to have considered and be aware of all the possible consequences of such.- both at that point in time as well as in the future.. Implication counselling is a requirement of all licensed fertility centres in the UK as regulated by the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority. For more information please visit www.hfea.gov.uk.
While the content of an implications counselling session is confidential, the Donor Coordinator will be aware that it has taken place and that all significant aspects regarding being a donor/recipient or surrogate have been discussed.
How to access the service
Patients can self-refer for counselling at any point in their treatment journey, so prior to, during or after treatment. Your treatment clinician may discuss with you whether you think counselling may be of benefit and it will then be up to you to decide if you would like to move forward with this. It will always be your choice as to whether you access counselling (with the exception of implication counselling as explained above).
